Last Night a DJ Saved my Life: Staff Profiles in Courage (DJ Verdi)
Thursday, 20 April 2017 16:45

Welcome to the eighth instalment of the universally adored Malthouse blog feature titled “Staff Profiles in Courage.” This semi-regular format involves me sitting down with a noteworthy Malty staffer, at my hallowed table in the bar, hopefully turning on my voice recorder properly, always managing to drink a hoppy ale (or two), and asking a number of ferociously researched questions about their life and career. [1]

This one was a little different. The interviewee had never served me a beer – in fact, we had never met. That is because Dave Green, better known as DJ Verdi, is a hip Disc Jockey who has been playing at Malthouse for around five years, and I have a record collection filled with Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Chris de Burgh and the album made by Wham’s back-up singers Pepsi and Shirley. And I for one welcome our Hopstock overlords...
Wednesday, 12 April 2017 18:51

The Craft Beer Capital (CBC) people are wonderful. Every year they organise Hopstock, a Wellington-wide celebration of sticky, green hopped, resinous and, frankly, sensual fresh hopped beers simply to honour my birthday.

I really liked it, and there is the added advantage that it also reflects quite nicely my beer tastes, then and now. Here is the first paragraph in full:

“Hey, why the Boneface?” - Boneface Brewery Launch
Monday, 20 March 2017 15:10

When I first started writing about beer the very concept that people in Upper Hutt would even be drinking craft beer seemed rather farfetched (at best). Around that time, I was asked at a regular tasting event in an undisclosed location in Wallaceville “where can I find good beer around here?” and my (non-sarcastic) answer was “Wellington”.

“Sour, sweet, bitter, pungent – all must be tasted”: Sourfest 2017
Wednesday, 15 March 2017 08:45

This week my personal beer hell continues with a second straight column all about sour beers. I have grabbed the title of this blog from a Chinese proverb because my own quotations about sour beers would generally be caught and deleted by even the most basic profanity filter.
